Poul Anderson, Harvest The Fire, Chapter 11.
When members of an alien race are featured regularly in an sf series, the readers or viewers become familiar with the characteristics of that race and expect any future presentations to be consistent. For example, a Vulcan will not thank anyone for promoting him to a higher rank in Starfleet because he assumes that he has earned the promotion on his merits. However, Spock says that Kirk is especially worthy of respect so perhaps the human custom of saying "Thank you," even though it is unnecessary, should be observed when conversing with Admiral Kirk...
Readers of Poul Anderson's future histories learn what to expect from Ythrians, Cynthians, Wodenites, Merseians and Lunarians. For example, Lunarians are proud, individualistic and reckless. When Nicol refers to "insurance," we are told that the Lunarians:
"...knew that concept, though in their society it was minor." (p. 155)
This fits with what we know about them and we commend Anderson for keeping the characterization consistent.
How much is in common between Lunarians and Ythrians? Both are proud and fight duels.

Kaor, Paul!
It would be consistent with the Lurnarian character to disdain things like insurance for automobile accidents and damage to property!
