Servant

Poul Anderson, Vault Of The Ages, Chapter 5.

"'The Chief,' Ralph had said, 'is the first servant of the tribe.'" (p. 54)

Ralph is the Chief of Dalestown whose wisdom we have already appreciated.

Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave
-copied from here.

Aslan, appointing a London Cabby as the first King of Narnia, asks him if he will:

"'...be the first in the charge and the last in the retreat?'"
-CS Lewis, The Magician's Nephew (London, 1998), p. 146.

A single sentence in a Poul Anderson juvenile novel takes us into the New Testament, then into a juvenile novel by CS Lewis, and that is as far as we travel this evening - although I return to Julian May's Magnificat.

Kaor, Paul!

And, of course, one of the titles of the Pope is "Servant of the servants of God." That too goes back to what Christ said.
