A Blunt Wedge

Poul Anderson, Vault Of The Ages, Chapter 8.

"Ralph's army was drawn up in the formation his people had always used, a double line in the shape of a blunt wedge, with himself and most of his guards at the point." (p. 82) -

first rank: axes and spears;
behind them: long pikes and infighting weapons;
at intervals: company banners;
on the flanks: horsemen with lances and swords;
on higher ground: boys and older men with bows and slings;
tight enough to hold, then advance.

Kaor, Paul!

And I remember how the Roman soldier, Gratillonius, commented about that swine array in the the last volume of THE KING OF YS, as he was combating invading barbarians in 407. Altho he did not despise it, Gratillonius commented that old time Roman legionaries of his youth could have handled the swine array fairly easily, due to the discipline, large and small unit cohesion, training, etc., of Roman soldiers.
