Since we have been finding some parallels between Poul Anderson's Technic History and Juliam May's Galactic Milieu -
interstellar civilization
extra-solar colonies
a planet called Avalon
telepathy
rebellion
canonization
- and since it is nearly Christmas, maybe we should let May contribute to our Food Thread (which originated when comparing Anderson's works with SM Stirling's).
At an annual family gathering after midnight mass, Uncle Rogi consumes:
Buffalo wings
gorgonzola dip
Poltroyan (alien) pickled tariji eggs
dim sum
curly fries
kidney bean salad
walnut-maple-fudge torte
a large hot buttered rum -
- seated in "...a chair half-concealed by the Christmas tree." (Magnificat, Chapter Sixteen, pp. 263-264)

Kaor, Paul!
If we ever have an interstellar civilization, as I hope will happen, I can imagine some foods from other planets being exported as delicacies to Earth. I recall Chives recommending some Unan Besarian sea food for dinner in A STONE IN HEAVEN. Of course such imported non-Terrestrial would need to be harmless and DIGESTIBLE to humans on Earth.

Sean,
James Ching liked restaurants with ET menus and van Rijn recommended Ansan soup.

Kaor, Paul!
More examples I should have thought of!

Non-terrestrial food.
Some such potential foods might have toxins that could be eliminated either by processing or selective breeding or genetic engineering.
For terrestrial examples:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassava
needs to processed to remove toxins

Canola is a variety of rapeseed selectively bred to not have a certain toxin
So far I am not aware of genetic engineering for such a purpose.
