Hymns

Dominic Flandry to Olaf Magnusson:

"'The Roidhun could make a personal appearance singing 'Jesus Loves Me' and I'd still want us to keep our warheads armed.'"
-The Game Of Empire, CHAPTER EIGHTEEN, p. 396.

So they still have that kind of Christianity in Flandry's time.

"Jesus loves me, this I know
"For the Gospels tell me so."

I have heard of two variations:

"Buddha loves me, this I know
"For the Sutras tell me so."

"Bacchus loves me, this I know
"For the bottle tells me so."

- and have thought of many more:

Adonai... the Torah...
Indra... the Veda...
Rama... Ramayana...
Krishna... the Gita...
Shiva... the Tantra...
Ahura... the Gathas...
Odin... the Eddas...
Homer... his epics...
Socrates... the Phaedo...
Plato... his Republic...
Aristotle... his Logic...
Allah... the Koran...
Darwin... his Origins...

- and the odd man out:

Hitler hates me, this I know
For his Mein Kampf tells me so.

Kaor, Paul!

Looks like I will have to look up that hymn, "Jesus Loves Me"! I assume it's an evangelical Protestant song.

I'm a bit surprised by the inclusion of the Koran in your list. I saw noting in Dawood's translation to make me think of the love or "caritas" God has for His creation. So great a love that it included sending His Son to become man and die for us.

I am puzzled by the listing of DARWIN and his THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES. I saw noting in that book even mentioning love.

And the bit about Hitler and MEIN KAMPF was grimly appropriate, in a reverse way!

Sean,
Of course my list was not necessarily serious in every respect, just a matter of thinking of a name, then an appropriate book title, that might fit into the rhythm of the hymn.
Paul.
