Languages

In Poul Anderson's Technic History:

English becomes Anglic;

French becomes Fransai;

Spanish becomes Ispanyo on Nuevamerica;

Polesotechnic League merchants speak "League Latin";

Gwydiona and Lochlanna are derived from Anglic;

the Kirkasanter language has remote affinities with a few known languages, including ancient Anglic;

on Avalon, human choth members are bilingual in Anglic and Planha although they lack feathers;

Olaf Magnusson is fluent in Eriau and two other Merseian languages;

no one speaks Temporal or Exaltationist, which belong to a different timeline;

Flandry, like Everard in the Time Patrol timeline, acquires other languages electronically as needed and is trained to learn quickly;

Aycharaych is a universal telepath.

Kaor, Paul!

And I was esp. interested by that bit in THE REBEL WORLDS about how Flandry was taught how to LEARN quickly and rapidly. Far more quickly than civilians needed to learn.

The facility can be trained, but some people retain the childhood ability to master sounds and grammar very quickly, while most people lose it.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

And Flandry was trained to quickly learn far more difficult NON-human languages.

Ad astra! Sean
