Aeneas And Barsoom II

(I suspect that my page view counter is malfunctioning but, if it is accurate, then there have been 616 page views so far today as against 339 yesterday. If there are a lot of new blog readers, then welcome and please comment.)

The Day Of Their Return, 16.

See Aeneas And Barsoom.

There are other minor similarities, e.g.:

"'You may come forth... In disguise, naturally, garb, hair and skin dyes, instruction about behavior.'" (p. 197)

Skin dye was used to disguise John Carter as a red Martian. Dye was unnecessary when he posed as a white Martian from which we deduce that white Martians, like white Earthmen, were really pink! Disguise as a twelve-foot, six-limbed green Martian is impossible although someone did a good mock-up of one at an sf con and the stathas used for transport on Aeneas and elsewhere in the Terran Empire are curiously green and six-legged.

Kaor, Paul!

I too hope over 600 persons dropped by the PA blog today! And that some will comment.

And those green, six legged stathas we see in THE DAY OF THEIR RETURN makes me wonder if here Anderson was showing homage to ERB.

Ad astra! Sean

Poul did do the odd ERB homage -- he's one of our ancestors, after all!

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

Of course I agree! Edgar Rice Burroughs, along with Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, was one of the ancestors of modern science fiction.
