Desai Saves The Day

Some novel titles used to be a full sentence beginning with the central character's name, e.g.:

Mr. Britling See It Through by HG Wells;
Biggles Sees It Through by WE Johns;
The Saint Sees It Through by Leslie Charteris;
Henrietta Sees It Through by Joyce Dennys;
Ben Sees It Through by J. Jefferson Farjeon;
Miami Sees It Through by Patricia and Fredrick McKissack;
Bertie Wooster Sees It Through by PG Wodehouse;
Bulldog Sees It Through (but this one is a film);
Bulldog Drummond Stands Fast by Gerard Fairlie.

Sorry, folks. I meant to avoid a list, then I found eight times "...Sees It Though." Why couldn't Drummond have seen it through?

My point, however, was that Chunderban Desai is the unsung hero of Poul Anderson's The Day Of Their Return and that an alternative title could have been Desai Saves The Day (or even ....Sees It Through). Check it out:

the Sector Governor's office is taken in by Aycharaych;
Desa lets Aycharaych travel on Aeneas because the Governor has ok'ed it;
however, Desai also has a hunch and checks with Terra;
he learns the truth about Aycharaych;
he tells Tatiana Thane;
she tells Ivar Frederiksen;
Ivar asks Jaan to describe an Elder;
the description matches Aycharaych...;
Ivar pulls back from the brink...;
of course, Aycharaych escapes and fights Flandry later.

But well done, Desai.

Kaor, Paul!

At least that list was amusing!

I do get your point about Commissioner Desai and alternate titles for THE DAY OF THEIR RETURN. But, DESAI SEES IT THROUGH seems rather blah to me. So I would still prefer Anderson's title for the book.

It was fortunate for the Empire that something about Aycharaych niggled at Desai so much he was not content to accept him at face value as a harmless tourist, but sent inquiries to Terra for anything to do with him or the planet "Jean Baptiste."

Sean,

Of course DESAI SEES IT THROUGH is a mere joke title suggestion.

Of course! And I was being too literal minded! (Smiles)

Making connections and seeing discontinuities is an important part of being "clever". Desai fits that bill. And of course, being suspicious is part of his job description, because he can take it for granted that people will try to deceive him all the time.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

I agree, it was necessary for Desai to have some degree of wariness if he was to be able to do his job.
