Mirkheim, XV.
As the trader team enters the Maian System, Hermes is, among other things:
"...a shining of seas sun-brightened or moon-shimmery." (p. 205)
This is a reminder that what are experienced as different times of day on a planetary surface are different parts of the planet when seen from space. Similarly, different seasons of the year are different positions on the planetary orbit.
After entering atmosphere with power systems turned down and therefore without any internal compensation field, Chee Lan says that she is as alright as any other squashed tomato whereas Adzel says that he found the manoeuvre refreshing after so long weightless. This is a reminder that Cynthians and Wodenites have different physiologies and also that Chee Lan and Azel have different attitudes. Having created these characters, Poul Anderson keeps them consistent.
The action begins.
