Complicated Characters Continued

The Winter of The World, III.

In Arvanneth, the four Orders of Wisdom, Red, White, Gray and Black, include both monks and nuns. It was Arvanneth that had first civilized Rahid.

The technologically advanced Seafolk nations occupy the island of Orenstane and many smaller islands and archipelagos across the Mother Ocean. The largest such nation, Killimaraich, is ruled from its capital, Eaching, by the Seniority which tries to restrain the lesser nations from conflicts that could become war with the Empire. However, there is continual friction with Seafolk merchants and explorers.

Sirdir envisages eventual Imperial conquest of the Rogaviki and the Seafolk. The Empire is civilized. They are not. Hubris, we suspect.

Kaor, Paul!

IIRC, Killimaraich directly ruled the eastern half of what is now Australia, while the western half were vassal states tributary to Eaching. And Killimaraich would far rather the annoyingly revived Empire had not been hammered back together by the Barommians!

The Empire is more or less analogous to China; and as far as China was concerned, they were civilization and everyone else were barbarians who should be on their knees offering tribute.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

I too thought of China as an analogy. One major difference, tho, was the Rahidian Empire's openness to technological advances: using steam power and (I think) telegraphy. Both the Empire and Killimaraich seems to have regained an 1850's level of technology.
