More colourful language. The Jugular might be appropriately named.
Poul Anderson wrote about historical periods, future technological periods and future post-technological, post-catastrophe periods. Post-catastrophe can resemble historical but need not be historically accurate.
The oldest tales of the Rogaviki are about conflict with Southrons and Donya expects this to continue into an indefinite future. She has no concepts that things might have been different or that they could be different again.

I doubt it can be different. The rest of the human race and the Rogaviki has become different species. Conflict will be inevitable and will last till one or the other is broken. Most likely the Rogaviki, confined as they seem genetically hardwired to be to living in a fairly narrow territory.

I really, really wish I had thought of discussing THE WINTER OF THE WORLD in one of my letters to Anderson. I might have proposed some comments about it similar to what I have been saying or said in the blog. I would like to have known how he might have replied!
