Lear

"Un-Man," IX, p. 64.

On the run, Naysmith quotes from King Lear. All the Brothers are Shakespeare fans although I do not think that that can be in the genes.

I heard myself proclaimed,

And by the happy hollow of a tree

Escaped the hunt. No port is free, no place

That guard and most unusual vigilance
Does not attend my taking.

A future history shares with us our cultural and literary past.

Kaor, Paul!

Shakespeare and Kipling seems to have been the two writers Anderson was most fond of! Altho we know of others he liked, such as Chesterton and Leslie Charteris. And he definitely read as well Lewis Carroll's two ALICE books. And had apparently read still others, like Dante.

In fact, there may well be a genetic element in literary tastes. Twin studies have shown that identicals separated at birth tend to develop similar tastes in the arts, enter similar professions, and have similar politics. It's not a one-to-one correspondence but it's far greater than random. Same with ordinary siblings separated at birth, though to a lesser degree.

I have read of how surprisingly much identical twins can have in common. Even when separated at birth. No argument there. I do know PA had a brother, but I have no idea how much he and PA had in common.

Btw, I even once gave Anderson a book for a b'day present, Lewis Thorpe's Penguin Books translation of St. Gregory of Tours THE HISTORY OF THE FRANKS. One of my favorite chronicles from Medieval times.

One of the advantages of large families is that you're likely to have a range of similarities in siblings. I'm the youngest of four: my eldest brother and I are extremely similar, in build, complexion, speech tones and patterns; in fact, we've often been mistaken for each other. We also tend to have similar interests and tastes. My middle siblings, much less so.

And I'm the middle of three sons of my parents. But I fear we all differed fairly sharply from each other in looks, personalities, and characteristics. My late mother told me my older brother took after her father in appearance. And my deceased father told me I took after his older brother in looks.
