The Holms

Poul Anderson, The People Of The Wind IN Anderson, Rise Of The Terran Empire (Riverdale, NY, 2011), pp. 437-662, I.

Daniel Holm, Second Marchwarden of the Lauran System, and his son, Christopher Holm/Arinnian of Stormgate Choth, converse by telescreen. When Christopher "went bird"/joined an Ythrian choth, he had to make some compromises in order to be reconciled with his father:

 he would continue to aim to become a professional mathematician;

he would continue to receive some financial help although he would no longer live at home.

In fact, Arinnian values mathematics as a mental equivalent of flying and earns additional income as a herdsman and hunter among Ythrians.

Daniel Holm is way too controlling for my liking. If I were an Avalonian parent, then my son or daughter would make their own decisions about whether to continue their studies, to join a choth or to accept financial help and would not have to make any comprises in order to be "reconciled."

They are two good guys. I just disagree with Daniel's attitude. There are also problems with Arinnian. See here.

Kaor, Paul!

But I would be more inclined to disagree with you and agree with Daniel Holm. What made the latter react so strongly to Christopher "going bird" was precisely THAT, because "Arinnian" seemed to be scorning or denigrating mankind. And to have an impossible, neurotic desire to actually BE a Ythrian.

Sean,

Those were indeed Arinnian's problems but I, as a parent, would not have had a big row with him about it.

Paul.

But parents and children will have rows about major and minor issues, now and into the future. Most will simply not be like you, rightly or wrongly.
