Planha-Influenced Anglic

(Ythrians have lips, not beaks.)

The People Of The Wind.

On Avalon, the planet jointly colonized by human beings and Ythrians, the human language, Anglic, is influenced by the Ythrian Planha:

vowels are "pure" (p. 437);
r's are trilled;
m's, n's and ng's are almost hummed;
speech is deeper, slower and more strongly cadenced.

In addition, Daniel Holm's son, who has joined an Ythrian choth, speaks Anglic in a different accent and as if translating from an Ythrian brain.  Holm Senior has learned not to argue for family against choth. He recognizes that when his son speaks of faring to his choth in time of war, he is no longer Chris but Arinnian.

Now we meet the human scholar who had contributed to the Earth Book:

"Arinnian of Stormgate, whose human name is Christopher Holm and who has rendered several Ythrian works into Anglic, prepared this version for the book you behold.
"-Hloch of the Stormgate Choth.
"The Earth Book Of Stormgate"
-Poul Anderson, INTRODUCTION IN Anderson, David Falkayn: Star Trader (Riverdale, NY, 2010), pp. 599-600 AT pp. 599-600.

We quote Anderson quoting Hloch introducing Arinnian's story about another set of characters who appear only once in the Technic History although one of them quotes Nicholas van Rijn whose protege, David Falkayn, founded the colony on Avalon where Hloch and Arinnian write. As I say, this is a multi-layered future history.

Kaor, Paul!

I thought this influencing of Anglic by Planha was more true of human members of Ythrian choths than of wholly or mostly human communities on Avalon?

Sean,
Both. Planha influenced Avalonian Anglic and Arinnian's Anglic was even more Ythrianized.

Kaor, Paul!

And I remember one Imperial Terran commenting on how Anglic language news outlets on Avalon used Ythrian idioms that would seem strange coming from humans.
