The People Of The Wind opens with dialogue between two new characters. Daniel Holm tells his son that he cannot leave on the eve of war. The younger man replies that that is why he has to go:
"'They're calling Khruaths about it around the curve of the planet... Where else should I fare but to my choth?'"
-Poul Anderson, The People Of The Wind IN Anderson, Rise Of The Terran Empire (Riverdale, NY, 2011), pp. 437-662 AT I, p. 437.
We read about Weathermaker Choth in "Wingless" and about Stormgate Choth in "Rescue on Avalon" but this is the first mention of Khruaths and also the first hint that a human being might join a choth unless, having read the Technic History in chronological order in The Technic Civilization Saga, we remember Hloch's Introduction to The Earth Book Of Stormgate:
"...because of its nearness to populous Gray, our choth receives more humans into membership than most."
-Poul Anderson, INTRODUCTION WINGS OF VICTORY IN Anderson, The Van Rijn Method (Riverdale, NY, 2009), pp. 75-77 AT pp. 75-76.
Young Holm's remark is the first hint in any of the installments of the History rather than in a later written fictional introduction. The Technic History presents multiple layers of narrative and this post has referred to the opening two paragraphs of a novel, to two juvenile short stories and to one fictional introduction. History lives.

Kaor, Paul!
And I remember how old Daniel Holm was not happy about his son going to attend a YTHRIAN choth. One of his fears was that too many humans on Avalon were going too far in being Ythrianized, at the expense of their uniquely human qualities.

Correction, I meant to substitute "khruath" for "choth" in my first comment here.
