Ivar Frederiksen and Jaan walk along a mountain side browser trail.
"Overhead, the sky was empty save for the sun and one hovering vulch." (p. 203) (Scroll down.)
"A jackrat scuttered from the bleached skull of a statha." (p. 205)
These are solid background details. There was a vulch in The Rebel Worlds and there are many references to stathas.
Jaan refers to the nebulae concealing the core of the Milky Way, a metaphor for ordinary experience concealing deeper truth.
He says that Ivar is the nucleus of a political structure that will guide Aeneans through the coming upheaval and that, for this role, he:
"'...will have skilled guidance.'" (p. 203)
Warning lights should by now be flashing in Ivar's mind. Someone is organizing the prophesied upheaval? Who?

And that "skilled guidance" would be provided by Aycharaych, acting thru his hapless puppet Jaan! And at long last we finally see some signs from Ivar of wariness and suspicion after he reached Orcus.
And that bleached statha skull reminded me of how, in Western stories and movies, we might see the bleached skulls of cows or buffaloes.
