"'I picked it up in Japan in 1956.'"
-Perish By The Sword, 3, p. 24.
An evocative year:
Hungary;
Krushchev's Secret Speech;
publication of "Margin of Profit," Poul Anderson's first Nicholas van Rijn story;
I was seven, starting to attend boarding school in Scotland, and had begun to read the Dan Dare sf comic strip. Looking back, we see ourselves looking forward.

I'm not sure my parents had even met at that time. I know they didn't marry until 1957.
Kaor, Paul!
When I saw that "1956" I too immediately thought of the Hungarian uprising against the Communists and their Soviet masters. And of how Kruschev brutally crushed it. It was also the year of the Suez Canal fiasco by the UK and France. Yes, 1956 was a significant year!

David,
You were a potential future.
Sean,
I should have mentioned Suez. I do not cover up UK fiascos.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
I did not think at all you were doing so! It's impossible to remember everything!
