The question of political legitimacy has been discussed on the blog and comes up again here:
"'Barholm's a son-of-a-bitch, right enough,' [Raj] said...'But I swore Barholm an oath, and I'll not be party to his murder.'"
-The Forge, CHAPTER SIXTEEN, p. 294.
Two histories; one issue. A better knowledge of Roman history might indicate what will happen next in SM Stirling's and David Drake's The General series. So far, each war just leads to the next war.

Kaor, Paul!
If you want first hand sources on which Drake/Stiring based THE GENERAL books, I suggest the works of Procopius, who was the friend and secretary of Belisarius (e.g., the WARS, BUILDINGS, and, very dubiously, THE SECRET HISTORY). Later writers like J.B. Bury's HISTORY OF THE LATER ROMAN EMPIRE FROM THE DEATH OF THEODOSIUS I TO THE DEATH OF JUSTINIAN I are also good.

Sean,
Thanks.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
Perhaps the most convenient way of reading Procopius is thru the LOEB CLASSICAL LIBRARY Greek/English edition of his works.
