Time And Place: Bar Hopping

See:

Time And Place: Eating In San Francisco

Perish By The Sword, 4, pp. 35-36:

cappuccino in an Italian place;

Scotch and soda in a plush hotel bar;

jazz in a college bar joint;

"kind of fun" in the Howl on San Pablo Avenue.

The Howl:

a single room;
a tiny bar;
candles in wine bottles;
a local artist's paintings;
a rack with books like On The Road;
banjos, guitars and bongo drums;
Mexican music on the hi-fi;
few customers at an early hour;
a young man telling the barman that Schwartz (which one?) was a better poet than Ferlinghetti;
a conversation linking Eisenhower to General Motors;
a young broke writer who cadges a drink and gives offense.

Time and place are with us yet.

Kaor, Paul!

And in his early years as a writer Anderson might very well have been close to being broke himself. So, I'm sure he empathized with that young and broke writer.
