"They couldn't bear to stop being rich" is an evocative and ominous line! Evocative in that there are formerly wealthy people who had great difficulty, including feelings of shame and humiliation, at adapting to a lower standard of life when that became necessary. Ominous in that the longer it takes for once wealthy persons to adapt to that, the harder it becomes to take the steps needed for even trying to improve one's lot.
