In There Will Be Time, Poul Anderson spends an entire page beautifully describing one 31 October day in Senlac. Robert Anderson expects "...little spooks..." (XVI, p. 170) at his door.
In SM Stirling's Shadows Of Falling Night, Harvey Ledbetter reflects that Turkey swarms with metaphorical spooks which will be joined by literal spooks when the Council of Shadows meets there. (CHAPTER THREE, p. 31)
Ellen Breze describes a Shadowspawn gathering as "'...the serial killer's convention...'" (CHAPTER FIVE, p. 67)
Is this a reference to Neil Gaiman's The Sandman: The Doll's House? (see image and here.)
(There may be a proofreading point in that last quotation.)

Kaor, Paul!
Because of the wars and upheavals in the region, you can bet Turkey and the Middle East is STILL swarming with metaphorical spooks! Even China probably has spies there.
Just a slight correction, the Council of Shadows was planning to meet in Tbilisi, GEORGIA, not Turkey.
I checked my copy of SHADOWS OF FALLING NIGHT for the text you commented on, and that bit of Chapter Five runs: "Mill-and-swill at the serial killer's convention." I think Ellen Breze was thinking of how the "party" she and Adrian was attending was being presided over by his great-grandfather Etienne Maurice Breze. Not thinking in general of the Shadowspawn.

Sean,
Ah, so the singular possessive is correct.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
Exactly! Once I noticed I realize Ellen was referring to how it was her monstrous great-grandfather-in-law's "convention."
I would far rather go to a party or reception hosted by the Terran Emperors or their Crown Princes at the Coral Palace! Far safer and much nicer people!
Sean
Sean,
You have a British talent for understatement.
Paul.
Kaor, Paul!
Thanks! That's a compliment! And after that little "do" at Great-grandfather's Etienne Maurice's palace, anyone would feel more kindly about that well-meaning fop, the Duke of Mars.
