Abrams

We first see Commander Max Abrams, Imperial Naval Intelligence Corps, not on Merseia but on Starkad but let's have a look at him before I stop blogging for the night.

Abrams is a stocky man with a big face and a hooked nose. His home planet is Dayan in the Vega region. He has a young daughter, Miriam, who will be significant later but that was not known at the time of the writing of this novel.

Ensign Dominic Flandry's flitter is missing so this Flandry is probably dead. Abrams asks to speak to:

"'...the greenskin cinc...'"
-Ensign Flandry, CHAPTER TWO, p. 13.

He also says, "'Snarch!'" (p. 14) What does this mean?

It is night on Starkad and here.

Kaor, Paul!

Before speaking to the Merseian commandant on Starkad, Commander Abrams, a devout Jew, also took the time needed to recite the Kaddish prayer for Flandry. I'm a bit surprised you did not note that.

That "Snarch" was only Abrams being good humoredly gruff to a young subordinate who had only recently started working in his office.

Sean,
Not got that far yet but we deduce that Abrams is Jewish because he is said to be religious and is from Dayan. We might have the Kaddish for Ketlan.
Paul.

Oops! I thought you might have gotten that far!

So Ketlan was of Jewish Polish and not of Catholic origins. In that case the Kaddish would be appropriate for his funeral. Again, my condolences for his loss.

Sean,
Thank you. Yes. We have even been told that Yossi has a right of return to Israel.
Paul.

If I'm not being too inquisitive, would that "right of return" apply to Yossi even if she did not consider herself to be Jewish?

The last line of this blog piece of yours reminded me of how it was "Evening on Terra" in Chapter 1 of ENSIGN FLANDRY, and "Night on Starkad," beginning Chapter 2. I think we are supposed to think of the Empire entering increasingly OMINOUS times.

Sean,

Yes, it is "Evening on Terra" and "Morning on Merseia."

I think the right of return is based just on having at least one Jewish grandparent because that was the Nazis' criterion.

Paul.

"Evening on Terra," which was also the evening of an old man's life (you know who!) and what Merseia hoped would be the evening and night of the Empire. And that "Morning on Merseia beginning Chapter of ENSIGN is supposed to make us think of the Roidhunate's triumphant and victorious hopes!

Having only one Jewish grandparent seems a rather thin basis to claim being Jewish!
