Ensign Flandry, CHAPTER EIGHTEEN.
In this chapter, Flandry says goodbye to:
John Ridenour (we will see him again);
Lord Hauksberg (we will not see him again);
Persis d'Io (we will see her and Flandry's son);
Max Abrams (Flandry will marry his daughter).
Despite all the evidence, Hauksberg continues to believe that the Merseians intended no harm. Like Abrams, he tells Flandry:
"'Don't get above yourself.'" (p. 188) (See here.)
- but in a completely different spirit.
I would have wanted to stay with Persis but I am not Flandry and indeed would not have got into that situation in the first place!
Abrams puts Flandry right.

Kaor, Paul!
I can well imagine the anger and frustration of Brechdan Ironrede and his Grand Council when the news arrived on Merseia of how their scheme for destroying most of the Imperial Navy at Starkad had been frustrated! Perhaps they had a few tankards of Merseian ale to drown their disappointment!
Perhaps Lord Hauksberg was one of those appeasers Emperor Hans managed, nearly thirty years later, to flush out of the gov't as a result of the Dennitzan raid into the Roidhunate.
Ad astra! Sea
