Diomedes, Starkad And Talwin

Nicholas van Rijn's and Dominic Flandry's futuristic adventures are not set against a gaudy space operatic backdrop with green aliens instead of red Indians but instead are embedded within complete scientifically imagined planetary ecologies.

On Diomedes, van Rijn intervenes in the war between Flock and Fleet, a single species with antithetical cultures.

On Starkad, Flandry defends land-dwellers against Seatrolls, then goes underwater to visit the Seatrolls with the exologist, John Ridenour.

On Talwin, Flandry sees the Domrath begin to hibernate, then greets the Ruadrath as they cease to estivate. When he converses in their shared language, Eriau, with a Ruad leader, Rrinn:

"Fangs gleamed under stars and Milky Way." (A Circus Of Hells, CHAPTER SIXTEEN, p. 323)

And the Ruadrath were more fortunate than the Domrath, with the former only needing to estivate for six months or so in the seas during the stunning heat of Talwin's summers. The long 15 months winters gave them so much more TIME simply for DOING things. But, even so, needing six months to estivate was still a hindrance.

How can the Domrath and Ruadrath break out of these crippling cycles of hibernating and estivating?

Sean,
Supermetals might have helped them if Talwin had been discovered back then.

But wouldn't both the Domrath and Ruadrath first had managed to advance enough, technologically, to be able to make use of any such help? And, of course, long and major studies would first need to be made.

Sean,
Yes, it would almost certainly have been too big a job even for Supermetals.

At least Ydwyr the Seeker's research base would be a start in that direction. Both from xenological studies and the contacts outsiders had with the natives of Talwin.
