The first thing that we were told about Ricardo Nansen, if we noticed it, was that he would be Captain of the Envoy. However, in his first appearance, he is addressed by Captain Gascoyne as:
"'Pilot Nansen...'" (p. 17)
- while receiving orders. OK. We are cool with this:
David Falkayn begins as an apprentice;
Dominic Flandry begins as an ensign;
Manse Everard begins as a Time Patrol recruit and trainee;
Nansen begins as a pilot.
We see these guys rise. Nansen travels neither through time nor through hyperspace, just through space, but through a lot of space because of time dilation. Space and time are intertwined. A Wells title: Tales Of Space And Time.
We will read about:
Nansen's career;
a very long interstellar journey;
the history of Earth during the period of that journey;
an eventual galactic outcome.
