Hanno Finds Svoboda

The Boat Of A Million Years, XVIII, 6.

Hanno's LONGEVITY STUDIES ad has attracted Svoboda. They do not recognize each other at first although they both sense some familiarity. He tells her that he has been:

"'Going to and fro in the earth, and walking up and down in it.'" (p. 400)

This is yet another Biblical quotation.

When he tells her that he is three thousand years old, she recognizes him as Cadoc whom she had been with for one night centuries before.

Before that, when she tells him that she had:

"'...reached Denmark in 1950.'" (ibid.)

- he comments:

"'Almost forty years ago...'" (pp. 400-401)

That contradicts the year date for this chapter as given in the Chronology on p. 601. How many rereadings of this novel has it taken for me to notice that?

That has to be it for tonight. I want to read something else!

Kaor, Paul!

Now, I wonder, wasn't it implausible for both Hanno and Svoboda to recall their brief meeting more than 900 years before? It seems more plausible that one or the other would have completely forgotten that earlier meeting.

Sean,

But they had made an impression on each other at the time.

Paul.

It still seems more likely that impression would have faded away to nothing with one of them after 900 years.
