Poul Anderson, The Stars Are Also Fire, 5.
"Ahead of her the sun was descending. Gold shivered across waves that swung deep blue and violet. They lullabied, they rocked her. The air was cooling; green odors off the range fell aft and she breathed a subliminally fine salt mist. In limitless heights, sunset glowed of the wings of an albatross. For this while, she was free." (p. 80)
Colors: gold, blue, violet;
sensations: rocking, cooling;
odors: "green";
taste: salt.
Freedom is symbolized by a bird in flight and experienced by Aleka. Her people are going under but this moment is for all time.

Kaor, Paul!
Dang! All this is making me think I should reread the HARVEST OF STARS books! But I don't mind. Because of this blog I have been rereading over the past five or six years books by Anderson I might very well have taken much longer to read again. To say nothing of how your blog has helped to inspire me try my hand at writing about Anderson in the articles you kindly "published" here.
And I'm also glad to have introduced you to the works of S.M. Stirling. A VERY worthy colleague and successor of Poul Anderson. And very glad Stirling himself somehow discovered this blog and has been interested enough to some times leave fascinating comments here.
