More late night other reading that nevertheless turns out to be relevant:
"It was never in our INTERESTS to eradicate life, just to CURE you of this INDEPENDENT THOUGHT problem.
"Picture the universe as a living, breathing ORGANISM and you will appreciate the importance of its many MOVING PARTS all working in SYNCHRONICITY with one another.
"This MALFUNCTION, or FREE WILL as you might call it, disrupts the entire body and it's our function to REPAIR these areas before the problem SPREADS."
-Mark Millar, The Ultimates, Vol. 2, Homeland Security (New York, 2004), Chapter Eleven, p. 7.
"We're really nothing more than the universe's IMMUNE SYSTEM." (ibid.)
Or, alternatively, the universe is healthy when dynamic and unpredictable? The sophotects in Poul Anderson's Harvest of Stars Tetralogy also come to regard themselves as a cosmic immune system.

Kaor, Paul!
And I reject such views, as seen in both THE ULTIMATES and the sophotects of Anderson's HARVEST OF STARS books. Bluntly, no matter how gently expressed, they are totalitarian in nature and would lead to either mankind dying out in despair (as in GENESIS) or becoming the kind of ant like "fauna" seen on Zolotoy in "The High Ones."
