Poul Anderson's Genesis presents three very different perspectives:
post-organic intelligences which we are told are nodes of the galactic brain although we read nothing from the point of view of that brain;
two human uploads, Christian Brannock and Laurinda Ashcroft, exploring emulations (conscious simulations) within the Terrestrial node, Gaia;
the man, Kalava, exploring Arctica and encountering a robotic embodiment of upload Brannock.
It gets more complicated because Laurinda is an avatar of Gaia whereas the emulated Christian and the robotic Brannock are two avatars of Wayfarer who is an avatar of the node, Alpha.
We want to know more about the nodes and the emulations and it is a wrench to be pulled back to Kalava who, however, is a necessary link in the convergent narratives.

Kaor, Paul!
I think we do get a glimpse of what that galactic brain might be like from the conversations some of the human characters in the HARVEST OF STARS have with the Teramind, the ruling AI of Earth in the HARVEST books.
Ad astra! Sean
