The Ship Sailed On

"Inconstant Star," Chapter XVI.

Ryan and Carita converse, then the chapter ends with:

"The ship sailed on through lightlessness." (p. 277)

In another future history, Amalfi and Dee converse, then the chapter ends with:

"Under Amalfi the city soared outward, humming like a bee, into the raw night."
-James Blish, Earthman, Come Home IN Blish, Cities In Flight (London, 1981), pp. 235-465 AT CHAPTER TWO, p. 285.

A ship sails. A city soars. These are timely reminders to readers of the interstellar vacuum through which the characters travel as they converse. The authors should and do recall the cosmic setting. In screen adaptations, the conversations should be followed by exterior scenes.

Kaor, Paul!

And Poul Anderson gives us similar examples of his characters conversing as they travel thru space. Such as the governing council of the STL generations ship/asteroid we in the interludes betweens stories in TALES OF THE FLYING MOUNTAINS.

Ad astra! Sean
