The Right To Breed

"Inconstant Star," Chapter V.

"Weoch-Captain...had his future to think of, the career that should bring him at last a full name and the right to breed." (p. 206)

Kzinti infantry have no names and are not allowed to breed. And we know from other texts that kzinti females are not sapient. Thus, a kzin with a full name owns a harem of animals as well as slaves of conquered species. Who created these guys? Larry Niven.

In these stories, Poul Anderson, creator of Merseians, Ythrians, Wodenites, Cynthians and many other sapient species, accepts the constraints of a fellow author's creations and makes them fully his own.

Kaor, Paul!

Ordinary male Kzint did have "use" or "functional" names, corresponding to their jobs or ranks. Such as "Gunner" or "Alien Technology" officer. And one high ranking Kzin governor of Wunderland had a son who was proud of his function name of "Aide-de-camp," after being assigned to his father's staff.

Ad astra! Sean
