Preserving Terrestrial life (see previous post) might be the start of preserving cosmic awareness:
"'If awareness is to survive the mortality of the stars, it must make the universe over. That work of billions or trillions of years will begin with some small, experimental undertaking. Shall it be now...at Earth?'" (pp. 107-108)
This sounds more like staving off cosmic extinction rather than surviving beyond it, as Anderson discusses elsewhere, e.g., here and here.

And these speculations makes it easy to think that here Anderson is transcending not merely Wells and Stapledon but himself as well!
