"Inconstant Star," Chapter XVIII.
Weoch-Captain proposes to:
kill Saxtorph's crew quickly and painlessly if they do as they are told;
kill Saxtorph in single combat;
eat his body;
place the head among his trophies.
Saxtorph thanks him for this great honor.
When a man tried to assassinate the Patriarch, the kzinti killing him were hampered by the need to keep his body intact so that it could be stuffed in honor. Mad Kdapt-Preacher, who taught that God made Man in his own image, was killed in single combat by the Patriarch, the highest honor for a dissenting kzin.

Kaor, Paul!
I remember that! I mean how Kdapt-Preacher was honored by the Patriarch of Kzin himself.
And I wondered just now how the Patriarchy handled the succession. When a Patriarch died, did his sons have to fight each other in single combat with the idea the last surviving son became Patriarch?
Ad astra! Sean
