Ensign Flandry.
To continue the theme of Merseia as perceived from different points of view, when Brechdan Ironrede, Hand of the Vach Ynvory and Protector of the Roidhun's Grand Council, walks on the terrace of his ancestral home, Castle Dhangodhan, he acknowledges salutes from a sentry and a gardener. See Merseian Customs. Behind him, banners snap on stone turrets.
Stopping and standing at the parapet, he looks down at:
walls;
gardens;
"...the forested slopes of Bedh-Ivrich..." (CHAPTER THREE, p. 22);
mists and shadows concealing the farms and villages in the valley -
- looks across at:
green peaks topped by granite crags and cliffs;
snowfields;
far glaciers -
- looks up at:
rising Koych;
a hunting fangryf, the sunlight gold on its feathers -
- hears:
a bugle;
a song;
the cataracts of the River Oiss -
- smells woodsmoke -
- imagines:
the Oiss flowing through the huge city stretching from the foothills to the Wilwidh Ocean;
the towns, mines, factories and ranches covering the plains east of the Hun range -
- and remembers that all these belong not to him but to the Vach Ynvory.

Kaor, Paul!
If Brechdan Ironrede had not been so implacably bent on the destruction of the Empire and tainted by a racism strong enough to accept extermination of entire intelligent races, he would have been very likable!
Ad astra! Sean
