Some Miscellaneous Connections

Star Prince Charlie.

What is there in common between Charles Stuart in Star Prince Charlie and Ivar Frederiksen in The Day Of Their Return?

In his Oxford tutor persona, the Hoka assumes the surname Smyth-Cholmondoley. A Dornford Yates character suggests that "colmondeley" means "beautiful" but I cannot find this word anywhere.

Poul Anderson has a Hotel Universe on the Moon.
Dornford Yates has a Hotel de l'Univers, Esteppemazan.
There is a Hotel de l'Univers, St Malo, also one in Paris.

As I say, miscellaneous points.

Kaor,l Paul!

I argue that the connection linking Charles Stuart in STAR PRINCE CHARLIE and Ivar Frederiksen in THE DAY OF THEIR RETURN is that of the prince fated or prophesied to come and liberate his people from some kind of tyranny.

And that bit about Anderson/Dickson's "Smyth-Cholmondoley" and Dornford Yates "colmondeley" made me wonder if either Anderson or Dickson had read some of Yates' stories.

Sean,
But "Cholmondoley" is a name as the link shows.

Kaor, Paul!

I googled and was surprised to find out there is a REAL Cholmondeley family! So, the name was not just a fiction invented by Anderson/Dickson. I rather hope some of the Cholmondeleys have read the Hoka stories of Anderson/Dickson!

I knew a chimp named Cholmondoley in Kenya -- though of course it's pronounced more like "Chumley".

In one of Helen MacInnes' spy novels, the heroine, at that point known to the hero only by initials and surname, jokes that her first name is "Cholmondeley, spelled C h u m l e y." (It's actually Cecilia.)

Sean,
The word, "Cholmondeley," in this post links to Cholmondeley Castle.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling and Paul!

Mr. Stirling, I assume the "Chumley" you knew was not the Chumlee of the US TV show PAWN STARS ! (Smiles)

Paul: Yes, I saw that. Then I googled to find out a bit more about the Chomondeley family.

Chumley was a chimp at the Animal Orphanage, an animal-rescue facility attached to Nairobi National Park - sort of zoo-like.

One of my brothers used to smoke with Chumley; he'd go into the enclosure, sit on a branch, and hand Chumley the pack of cigarettes and the matches.

Chumley would open the pack, take out two cigarettes, open the box of matches, light one, light both cigarettes, close both and then hand them back to my brother along with one cigarette, and they'd sit on the branch together and have a smoke. He was a friendly beast mostly, and alarmingly intelligent -- about as smart as a human toddler.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

This chimp you used to know was very smart indeed if he could learn one of our more regrettable bad habits!
