Breakfast post before a long day out. Meanwhile, evening mists for Poul Anderson's and Gordon R. Dickson's characters:
"Surf boomed, nearly invisible in a chill, thick fog which rolled over the waters. That mist smelled of salt and seaweed, but the low sun turned it golden." (pp. 54-55)
Booming, chill, salt/seaweed, golden: four senses in two sentences reading like pure Anderson.
More happens in this chapter as other readers will be aware but my purpose is to highlight details that might be missed in the drama. Does Hoka Hector know that the test that apparently risks his life will be faked or does he just play his role to the hilt anyway?

I think Hector/Bertram MOSTLY played his assumed role to the hilt. While a small part of his extremely intelligent mind knew the "test" was a fake.
