Flandry And Zmayi

A Knight of Ghosts and Shadows, XVII.

Dominic Flandry thinks:

"I'd better get into that fight. The ychans don't realize we need a few prisoners." (pp. 562-563)

Here Flandry and Chives fight alongside beings that are Merseian by species against human Dennitzans. (In The People Of The Wind, human and Ythrian Avalonians fight against Terran Imperialists, mostly human but also some of other species.)

Bodin Miyatovich's fleet for his raid on Chereion includes among its crews "Qow of Novi Aferoch..." (p. 602) who challenges Flandry's decision to bombard the planet:

"'...a deed which someday will make lovers of beauty, seekers of knowledge, curse our names?' the zmay demanded." (ibid.)

Flandry explains to Qow why this action is necessary.

We have been following the theme of Merseians in the Technic History and, having reached the end of A Knight of Ghosts and Shadows, must next turn to the last novel in the Flandry period, The Game of Empire. However, Christmas preparations become an obstacle to regular blogging.

Kaor, Paul!

I'll make explicit what was left implicit, Flandry wanted some of those Merseian agents captured alive because they would need to be interrogated or 'probed for whatever information they had about Aycharaych and Merseian operations.

Your last sentence above reminded me of my annual Christmas time custom, rereading Anderson's Christmas story, "The Season of Forgiveness." A beautiful story!

Ad astra! Sean
