Dwyr Dies

Ensign Flandry, CHAPTER THIRTEEN.

Although Dwyr's point of view is presented only in CHAPTER TWELVE, he has dialogue in other chapters and the dialogue that culminates in his death is in THIRTEEN.

With his single living arm blasted off, he reaches out with metal tendrils which Flandry clasps.

"'Will you remember my name? I was Dwyr of Tanis, once called the Merry. They made me into this.'" (p. 132)

He was already recited Eriau duodecimals memorized by Flandry, crucial military intelligence, not yet understood. After imparting some further background information:

"'Remember Dwyr.'
"'We will always remember.'
"'Good. Now let me die. If you open the main plate, you can turn off my heart.'" (ibid.)

Flandry will not forget someone who died like that.

After some resistance from Hauksberg, who wants to take a live prisoner, and when Dwyr has regained the image of his wife, Flandry switches him off.

Dwyr, not a traitor to his species, died as an ally in the war against the Roidhunate.

Kaor, Paul!

I would like to think the Intelligence tower at Admiralty Center includes a Memorial Hall where esp. meritorious agents who died in Terra's service were commemorated with plaques dedicated to them--including one for Dwyr!

Ad astra! Sean
