Rufinus persuades Eochaid to join the attack fleet of his enemy, Niall. Eochaid, concealed among trees near the shore, seizes an opportunity to kill Niall with an arrow. The chiefs decide that the attack is foredoomed and withdraw. A single assassination has prevented multiple deaths and massive destruction.
Gratillonius drunkenly says:
"'The Scoti'll be back. You've bought us some years, though, some years, at least... Well, here's to you, old buddy. Best investment I ever made, leaving you your life there in the Wood. Paid me a hundred times over, you have. A thousand, if Dahut's free. Here's to you.'" (7, p. 351)
Dahut is not yet free and will take her revenge on Rufinus. She will require the special attention of Corentinus. But, at last, all that began in Ys will be finished.

Also, I doubt any of the other chiefs with Niall had the kind of status, prestige, mana, etc., needed for leading the kind of massive raid on the Empire Niall had planned.
