Kaor, Paul!
While I question some of your choices, what bothers me most is how Queen Gunli (Scothan) and Aline Chang-Lei (human) were not included. I think Aline would have been perfect for Flandry if he had felt the same way about her as she had for him.
Ad astra! Sean
Sean,
Sure. I simply didn't think of those characters when compiling this list.
Paul.
Cdr. Helena Jansky:
"No—back to back—" Helena's own blade rasped from its sheath. She lifted a shout for help. The nearest animal sprang for her throat. She hacked wildly, the blade twisted in her hand and scraped the muzzled face. Jaws clamped on the edged steel and let go with a bloody howl.
The story reflects when and where it was published, but it's some lively writing, and covers an era that is barely touched, otherwise.
Kaor, Dave!
I fear my first reaction was to think, "What awful prose!" A man or woman really skilled with swords would do far better.
Apologetically! Sean
Well ...
A) it's from 1952 and was written for Planet Stories;
B) Cdr. Jansky and company are NOT skilled with edged weapons, because their issue equipment is limited, both in type/numbers and in any effect against these particular enemies;
C) they're using ad hoc weapons against predatory animals.
It's a fun read, actually, and Anderson packs a lot more scene-building - multiple worlds, polities, intelligent species, etc. - into it than most of his contemporaries ever did, especially in 1952.
Thanks although it's come twice somehow.
