On The Bridge

Satan's World.

When times are normal, Nicholas van Rijn, remaining at a safe distance, employs David Falkayn, Adzel and Chee Lan, to work as a trader team. Now that times have become abnormal, the team has to split and to address a challenge where the profit might be not wealth but survival. Falkayn and Chee Lan go in Muddlin' Through to Satan while Adzel remains in the Solar System, then goes elsewhere, with van Rijn.

In space near Satan, Falkayn sits on the bridge of Muddlin' Through with Chee Lan aft in the fire control centre while they await the arrival of a probably hostile fleet. This sounds familiar: Kirk on the bridge with Scotty in Engineering... There are similar scenes in other works by Poul Anderson: Dominic Flandry sits on the bridge of his first, and only, command; the Nomad ship, the Peregrine, approaches a colonized planet... Again I argue that, having seen Star Trek and Dune on screen, we now want to see the Technic History there but in an authentic adaptation, of course.

Authentic is operative word! The DUNE adaptation has been very good so far; Villeneuve understands the visal/print dichotomy better than most directors.

Eg., he realized that you could not realistically cram DUNE's first volume into one movie, even a long one!

And how to let visuals and actors' nonverbals fill in for words.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

I have no objection to DUNE being filmed Well. But I still long for somebody to do a good job of filming some of the Nicholas van Rijn and Dominic Flandry stories!

Ad astra! Sean

Kaor, Dave!

No objection. I am sick of endless stale rehashes of STAR DRECK and STAR BLAHS!
