Like Tau Zero, The Avatar alternates between human interactions in the spaceship and the spaceship's passage through the cosmos.
Caitlin says:
"'...a service Dan performed would have no legal or canonical standing, but it'd be a wedding in every honest intent...'"
Poul Anderson, The Avatar, XXXIX, p. 342.
I thought that ship's captains could conduct legal marriages?
Susanne does not want to have a child in a lost spaceship with a finite food supply and has no means of contraception but omnicompetent Caitlin sets out to find a means.

Kaor, Paul!
Both UK and US law do not recognize as valid marriages performed or witnessed by ship captains (albeit some US states have contradictory legal precedents on this matter). And it varies from country to country.
