Meeting Aliens

In Poul Anderson's The Avatar, Dan Brodersen's spaceship, Chinook:

visits the planet Pandora but not when the original intelligent species is revisiting;

loses its Betan crew member, Fidelio, on Pandora;

explores the space station near the pulsar but not when any other space travelers are there;

is near a star gate when a nearly massless force field ship transits in just 37 seconds;

eventually finds the Others who had built the star gates.

The universe is full of intelligent beings coming and going but space is so big that it is not easy to find them.

Kaor, Paul!

The idea of a nearly massless force field ship befuddles me! It seems scientifically contradictory.

Many people are still convinced that life exists nowhere in the universe except on Earth. I am not so sure and I believe it is LIKELY that other planets also have intelligent beings. We simply don't know, as of now.
