Night Scene

Poul Anderson, "Chain of Logic," see here.

An outlaw gang creeps along beside the river. An action sequence approaches. However, an Anderson scholar pauses to appreciate the author's multi-sensory description:

vague light;
shimmering moonlight;
darkness;
wind;
soughing trees;
howling dog;
bellowing wild cow;
coolness;
dampness;
tiredness;
hunger.

We see, feel and hear with the gang which has walked for hundreds of miles through devastation, then past rich farms, in secret. Their boss has a plan.

Kaor, Paul!

The boss of this bandit gang has a plan because, like any leader with aspirations to deserve that name, he's trying to think further ahead than the immediate needs of himself and his followers. Whether or not he should SUCCEED is another question. I would say no, most times.
