Babur And Jupiter

Conditions on Babur sound almost exactly like those on Jupiter in Poul Anderson's Three Worlds To Conquer:

there is a solid surface, contrary to current views of Jupiter;
there are forests and volcanoes;
the atmosphere is hydrogen, helium, methane and ammonia vapor;
water is a solid mineral and building material;
the oceans are ammonia;
the dominant species has three sexes.

There are differences. For example, the two dominant species are entirely dissimilar despite the minor detail of three sexes in both cases. Also, on Jupiter, heavenly bodies, including the sun, are permanently concealed by clouds whereas Mogul is visible on Babur, which is described as sub-Jovian.

Kaor, Paul!

I wonder what "Jupiter like" planets elsewhere in the galaxy will show us? Some of them MIGHT have solid surfaces, forests, volcanoes, etc.

If you want conditions somewhat like that, ie: atmosphere with lots of hydrogen but a solid surface with forests volcanoes etc., maybe the super earth & sub neptune sized planets the astronomers are finding orbiting other stars will have such conditions.

Kaor, Jim!

And we see two roughly approximate planets in the Technic series: Suleiman in "Esau," and Paradox in "A Little Knowledge." To say nothing of Flandry's visit to Jupiter in HUNTERS OF THE SKY CAVE!

Merry Christmas! Sean
