David Falkayn And Dominic Flandry

We have followed David Falkayn's career from teenage apprentice on Ivanhoe to legendary Founder of Avalon. In Ensign Flandry, we begin to follow Dominic Flandry's career from teenage ensign on Starkad to Fleet Admiral and informal Imperial advisor.

Falkayn is sponsored by Nicholas van Rijn and marries van Rijn's granddaughter. Flandry is sponsored by Max Abrams and later marries Abrams' daughter.

Falkayn works for Solar Spice & Liquors, a member company of the Polesotechnic League, not for the Solar Commonwealth, whereas Flandry works for the Terran Empire, the successor state to the Commonwealth, not for any private outfit. However, Flandry would have preferred to have lived in the days of the League.

Both men have the ability to transform apparent disaster into triumphant success far surpassing the aims of the mere task in hand. Thus, Falkayn, merely by returning, at great personal risk, to his occupied home planet, Hermes, during the Babur War, gains the intelligence that will end the war. Thus also, Flandry not only defeats the McCormac Rebellion but also arranges for the assassination of the corrupt Sector Governor whose vile behavior had provoked the Rebellion in the first place.

Hail Falkayn and Flandry! We listed their achievements here.

The Technic History is not as detailed as European history. It merely gives that impression.

Kaor, Paul!

I agree with what you said about Falkayn and Flandry. I do wonder HOW Flandry would have gotten along with Nicholas van Rijn. I think there would have been pyrotechnics!

I remembered what Flandry said about the need for gov't to be legitimate in THE REBEL WORLDS. If he later supported a reluctant usurper (Molitor), it was because the Wang dynasty had irretrievably collapsed. I would have liked to have seen Flandry in his old age, when he was perhaps a trusted adviser of Emperor Karl, the grandson of Hans Molitor.

Sean,
The one place where van Rijn and Flandry might meet is the Old Phoenix.

Kaor, Paul!

I like that idea! And we do get a glimpse of Nicholas van Rijn at the Old Phoenix in "House Rule." Manuel Argos and Dominic Flandry would have been NATURAL guests for the Old Phoenix!
