If Poul Anderson's History of Technic Civilization were to be republished not in the seven omnibus volumes of Baen Books'
The Technic Civilization Saga but as individual novels and (mostly) shorter collections, then there would still be two ways to do it. If the original order of publication were to be (partly) restored, then Volume I would be
Trader To The Stars and Volume VII, I suggest, would be
The Earth Book Of Stormgate which collects twelve instalments, including one novel, with new introductions and therefore is not a shorter collection and indeed has been published in a three-volume paperback edition. If the chronological order of fictitious events were to be retained, then Volume I would collect eight instalments, Volume II would be the
Earth Book novel,
The Man Who Counts, Volume III would be an expanded
Trader To The Stars and so on.
However, I started to think about rearranging Technic History collections in relation to the three-volume Captain Flandry series which could be reorganized as follows:
Volume I (of Captain Flandry)
"Tiger by the Tail" (36 pages)
"Honorable Enemies" (26)
"A Message in Secret" (57)
"The Plague of Masters" (145)
Page total: 264
Volume II
"The Game of Glory" (37)
"Hunters of the Sky Cave" (151)
"The Warriors from Nowhere" (33)
Page total: 221
Volume III
A Knight Of Ghosts And Shadows (266)
The page numbers, taken from The Technic Civilization Saga, show that these would be three volumes of comparable length, each including one novel by my rule of thumb of 100+ pages.
