The Vastness Of Space And Time

"Hunters of the Sky Cave," XVII.

Entering a dark nebula:

"...his eyes told him that he sailed into Shadow Land, under walls and roofs larger than planetary systems, and his own tininess shook him." (p. 284)

"Here, in the heart of the nebula, dust and gas were condensing, a new star was taking shape." (ibid.)

"In a short time (a few million years more, when man was bones and not even the wind remembered him) atomic fires would kindle and a new radiance light this sky." (ibid.)

"When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone"

Millions of years - a short time - hence, a new sky. Our frequent companion, the wind, returns but this time only to forget mankind.

Though in the Technic History, humans are on thousands of planets and so likely to continue as long as the universe can support their form of life.

Kaor, Mr Stirling!

And the upheavals following the fall of the Empire must have encouraged many humans to settle new planets, fleeing the wars and chaos of the Long Night.

Ad astra! Sean
