Does this happen all the time in real life? Given that most people believe either what they are told or what they want to believe, how can the truth ever be learned? I have been amazed at some people's certainty in stating what happened, e.g., one of the times an airliner was shot down.

I do believe it is possible for events to be as tangled and uncertain as what you summarized here. Esp. if Aycharaych took years to laid down the foundations for these intrigues. And we do know that there are real double or even triple agents, moles, and infiltrators. So I don't find what you summarized here to be TOO implausible.
