Flandry travels from Terra to:
Vixen with Kit;
Diomedes, then Dennitza, with Kossara;
Ramnu with Miriam.
Kit remains on Vixen. Kossara dies on Dennitza. Miriam returns to Terra. And that summarizes three relationships. Flandry does not stay with Kit, tries to stay with Kossara and does stay with Miriam.
He also spent time in hyperspace with Kathryn McCormac but that was not from Terra and was not a relationship.

Artistically speaking, however melancholy or tragic it was for the persons involved, it was appropriate of Flandry not to stay with Kit and for Kossara Vymezal to die. It adds depths and texture to the Flandry stories.
I'm reminded, yet again, of how Rudyard Kipling considered two different endings to THE LIGHT THAT FAILED, a happy or tragic ending. My copy of that book contains as an appendix the happy ending, with some commentary. And I agreed with those critics who believed the tragic ending Kipling chose was better and more artistically satisfactory.
NOT that I have anything against SOME stories having happy endings! Such as the one we see in Stirling's THE PESHAWAR LANCERS.
